chocolate macarons

my failed macarons

so a few months back after i had mastered the vanilla macarons i decided to try and make a batch of chocolate macarons, and as you can see, i failed … … … miserably 😥

so i gave up … for a while … not until i got the courage to make another batch and they turned them out BEAUTIFULLY!!

the successful macarons ^_^

for the first 5 minutes in the oven it didn’t look promising, and so i decided to do the washing and ignore it, and then 10 minutes later the little feet started to peak and i was jumping up and down and resisting to open the oven door 😛  these are also my first flat looking macarons, my macarons usually have a little tip on top, but these look pretty awesome.

by the way, these macarons were for my work’s morning tea for a colleague’s birthday.  They were filled with coffee buttercream.  Hard on the outside but soft and melt in your mouth inside.

KoKo Black

So I finally had a chance to try the infamous KoKo Black.  And I must say that it was not quite what I expected.  I don’t know if that is in a good way or bad :S  I went to KoKo Black for high tea with my Might 8 minus 4 chickadees ^_^ KoKo Black is situated in Claremont Quarter, a new shopping centre which is extremely trendy and up-market.  It makes the indoors feel outdoors, maybe because of the glass ceiling.  I wonder how it’ll do in winter 😛  KoKo Black from the outside looks like a store that you’ll find in London with the black panelling and the large windows to peer inside.  What kind of put me off this cafe was the tables and chairs that were outside the cafe.  I always assumed KoKo Black would be a quaint cafe, but maybe because it is new it’s extremely busy.  Inside was quite nice.  There was a large table with what I coined upside down blue parasols as lighting in the centre of the seating area with tables and chairs surrounding the area.  We were seating against the wall which was nice, because I got to see the ins and outs of what was happening.

KoKo Black

Inside KoKo Black

The drinks there I must admit are much better than San Churros.  In a way that you didn’t feel like you were drinking a cup full of melted chocolate!  On this occasion we all had Ice Chocolates that were served in large globes that at the end of high tea all of us had not finished our drinks!  I had gone earlier to KoKo Black to try the Hot Chocolate Affrogato, Hot Chocolate and Ice Tea.  The Ice Tea wasn’t impressive.  My mother mentioned that it tasted like flavored water :S

Variety of Drinks

We had two different spoilers.  One has the Queen of Hearts and the other was the Autumn Spoiler for Two.  Even with 4 girls we were all struggling to finish it.  The Queen of Hearts was a 2-tiered sample of all the delights that was to be on offer.  On the bottom tier was the savory dishes such as a ham and cheese toastie, a sun-dried tomato and pesto toastie as well as a couple of quiches.  On the top tier was the sweet treats.  We had a lamington, lemon tart, opera cake and a vanilla panna cotta.  The Autumn Spoiler for Two had a pear sorbet, chocolate mousse, pear cake, gingerbread biscuit and a couple of chocolates.  I enjoyed the savory treats.  The lemon tart was a bit too sweet and tangy for my liking.  The pear sorbet was an interesting taste.  Something that I might not try again.  But overall it was a wonderful experience.  Me and my chickadees were able enjoy our time there and we didn’t feel like we were rushed at all like some places where they want you to leave as soon as you finish.

Our tasty treats

A moment is never complete without friends and poloroids ^_^

Whilst we were leaving we saw that the chefs were making creme brulee tarts.  So cute!!  I like how there was a viewing area so you got to see how they created all those yummy treats.  We also checked out the rest of Claremont Quarter before it closed and ended up walking into T2.  It has inspired me to collect teacups now!!  So much variety!!

let me eat CAKE!

CAKEE

I’m not a big cake person.  But maybe that’s because I haven’t found the perfect cake yet.  But OMG this cake is literally to die for!!  I love this cake.  My mum baked this cake too ^_^ Although I did the frosting 😀  It is a pure indulgence.  For those chocolate lovers out there, this is one cake YOU MUST TRY!  It is a 4 layered cake, of dark and milk chocolate with a chocolate ganache to layer it and covered in this “you can eat in one sitting” chocolate caramel fudge frosting.  Like literally, I had a small bowl of fudge frosting left over and just sat down and finished the WHOLE BOWL!!

The making of The Cake ^_^

I really love the frosting, and the chocolate, and everything about this cake.  Sighhhh even thinking about this cake is giving me cravings >.<

YUMM

theobroma chocolates

the theobroma chocolate lounge offers the “total chocolate concept” or so it says on their website 😛  it is in competition with san churro which, up to now was the only chocolate lounge that offered sweet decadence in a cup i.e. hot chocolate 😛  there are now at least 3 chocolate lounges i know of now.

san churro which gives you those spanish churros to dip into a variety of chocolate sauces.  i didn’t realise they were that good until i decided to try them end of last year.  and my favorite drink from there is hot and cold.  the hot chocolate with ice cold vanilla ice cream is YUM! even in such hot weather like today, i would still go for it ^_^

san churro

then there is koko black which i was also introduced to by my  beautiful chickadee who was visiting from melbourne.  she introduced me to the interesting wacky world of koko black on our macaron baking day.  i mean who has CHILLI CHOCOLATES?!?!? haha, but it was really interestingly yummy 😛  anyways, there is a koko black in perth.  i mean ARE WE COOL OR WHAT! i have to wait til the 2nd week of april to try it out with my uni chickadees.  ^_^

koko black chocolates

so finally i reach to the final chocolate lounge, and the one i tried with my photogenic and compassionate chickadee.  theobroma chocolate lounge is located at karrawara shopping centre which is next to curtin.  karrawara shopping centre has changed so much!! my photogenic chickadee compared the lights to singapore haha.  i must say, the hot chocolate wasn’t too bad especially when it was in a mug with a candle underneath to keep it warm.  my photogenic chickadee had a chocolate croissant which wasn’t as appealing as the menu might showed it.  but the hot chocolate was yummy ^_^

tickle my skittle

if anyone can think of a better title please be my guest!  for the past week i’ve been trying to think of a word that rhymes with skittle and actually makes sense!  and that’s as far as i got =_=

_

Skittle Cupcakes

so as you can see…it has something to do with skittles.  one of my friend’s randomly asked me on facebook about cupcakes.  i must admit i was quite surprised because i’m not very close to this friend.  we’re more like acquaintances.  so we were talking about cupcakes and how like he was interested in ordering some for another friend’s birthday.  her theme for the birthday was skittles so the icing was to be different colors that represent the colors in skittles.  they are yellow, orange, red, purple and green.  NO BLUE!!! i was looking at the girl’s pictures on facebook after her party and majority of her friends were in BLACK or BLUE and has anyone ever heard of a GREY skittle?!?!  hehehehe…oh wells…i guess skittles can always add more colors to their range ^_^ but sticking to what i knew, i just made those 5 colors.  i tried eating one and i haven’t had one in like 12 years and WoW they are HaRd!  like teeth cracking hard!

Fondant Decorated Chocolate Cake

i hope she liked them.  her pictures showed a pretty good time ^_^  let’s just say when i was making those cupcakes my stress levels were beyond repair as i also had a job application on that day.  i was running on pure adrenalin and the weekend was a welcome rest ^_^

Play it by numbers or by hearts?

So there was this 18th birthday party of a family friend.  The birthday girl is like the most beautiful person I’ve come across and like she is so like happy to share the special occasion with her friends…like a lot of her friends 😛  So I decided to make her cupcakes for her birthday and keeping to a casino theme which was what her birthday was centered around, I made card cupcakes.  I must say, the idea was there….getting it done was a bit more difficult, but at least the end result was quite neat 😛  You will understand at the end why I have named this blog “Play it by numbers or by hearts” or if not, maybe I have a weird sense of reasoning and I will try and explain it all in the end ^_^

J for Jack

So these cards as I said before took me two nights to complete.  They were highly fiddly because they were quite small and the cards kept on breaking, so luckily I made more than I needed to, although once packed, 4 of them broke and I only had 4 replacement cards left.  So very stressful on that night!!

The cards that took 2 nights to do

I forgot to mention that these cupcakes above are chocolate cupcakes with a grown up version of chocolate frosting.  Because it was an 18th, I added what is not allowed for kids 😛 Although it was very subtle, I think it added a nice touch, quite addictive as well when I was tasting it and piping the cupcakes, had to make sure there was enough to go around 😛

Citrus Cupcakes with Grown up version of Orange Frosting 😛

So the other flavor of cupcakes (I only made two flavors) is a citrus cupcake with a grown up version of orange frosting ^_^.  I tried a new citrus cupcake recipe, because I just love experimenting with cupcakes and I must say I really liked it.  Maybe because a habit of mine is not following the recipe and I stayed true to form and I liked it a lot 😛

Adding a heart for a simple touch

But the citrus cupcakes were simple, so I added my personalized touch of a heart on top.  Nice and simple and it matched the red cupcake paper too 🙂

I Heart Cupcakes

Me and my cupcakes

I love photography and photos, but I only love them when I’m not in them!  You see that black haired person avoiding the camera??  That’s me, I prefer to stay unknown…for now 🙂  But I kept on looking at this photo and the cupcakes look pretty awesome on the tray and then I noticed my fat jelly arm in the way…let’s just say you won’t be seeing pictures of me in a while 😛

How they were looking on the cupcake stand

So this was how they looked like on one of the stands.  I hope the birthday girl liked it.  She couldn’t stop talking about it to me after the party, so I’m assuming she did 🙂  I had to stock up the tray, so luckily I made 90 that night 🙂

Oh and before I forget, my play it by numbers refers to the cards and by hearts refer to the hearts on the citrus cupcakes 🙂 Do you get it!!

I Heart Cupcakes…A LOT ♥

Time to remember…

So remember how I said that my new year resolution was to blog more often?  I don’t see that happening -.-  Firstly, university takes up way too much time in my life, I’m practically married to it, it’s something that I want to divorce from 😛 and secondly, I haven’t really had much luck in getting orders to make cupcakes, although I guess making some randomly is always a good idea but not very good for the waist 😛

I’ve been buying way too many cooking books lately and I have so many ideas in my head.  Unfortunately I am one of those that can’t draw to save their lives, especially if it’s just a cupcake.  I can’t quite seem to get the cupcake-icing-decoration proportions right and usually it just looks like a 5 year old drew the picture.  Sigh, maybe I should start taking art classes as well…

Chocolate Cupcake with Chocolate Frosting and a Toffee Top

For the past couple of weeks I have made cupcakes.  I must admit without being overly too confident that my chocolate cupcakes are quite decadent and extremely chocolatey, so it isn’t for the faint hearted.  But in saying so, it isn’t sweet either.  I don’t want something that’s so chocolatey and sweet >_<

Tiramisu Cupcakes

Tiramisu Cupcakes

As well as chocolate cupcakes, I’ve been experimenting on Tiramisu Cupcakes.  Oh how yummy tiramisu is!!  I went to a well known local italian restaurant for a work dinner and O.M.G. tiramisu heaven!!  It was so wonderful and the slices were quite large as well, it made me do a jiggly dance ^_^  Lately, I’ve noticed myself dance when I taste something extremely appetizing, it doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s like everything around you fades and you’re in a state of euphoria.  I think I love my food too much!
